Oilapalooza: Through the Eyes of Our Network
A four-part mini series written by grant winners
Hello! I’m Jenna Stallard, Wildlife Care Manager over the Bird Department at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, and I’m thrilled to serve as Program Leader for our campus as the newest member of the Oiled Wildlife Conservation Network (OWCN). As I prepared for my first Oilapalooza event, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect, but I was eager to learn more about the network’s work, how the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance contributes, and what I’d be diving into as the new Program Leader.
What I didn’t anticipate was walking into that conference room on day one and being instantly swept up by the incredible energy and positivity in the air. I arrived feeling a bit nervous—especially since I had to give a brief presentation to introduce myself and our organization. Public speaking isn’t my strong suit, and it was clear that many attendees already knew each other well, forming a close-knit group.
However, Michael Ziccardi’s (OWCN Director) lighthearted touch of bringing out the badger and snake hats for speakers instantly set a friendly tone. Watching others put on these hats reminded me that we were all there to learn, connect, and even have a little fun—it helped me relax and embrace the experience. This welcoming atmosphere made a huge difference, allowing me to feel at ease in this fantastic network of people.
One of the highlights for me was participating in the full deployment drill. Seeing how different teams and roles come together—especially during the initial, slightly chaotic phase as everyone finds their rhythm—was incredibly valuable. It left me feeling more prepared and confident about responding in any future emergency.
Overall, the event exceeded my expectations. The talks, the drill, and, most of all, connecting with others to learn about their roles and experiences were immensely beneficial. I look forward to collaborating closely with this wonderful network in the future.
